Coming on April 20th is the latest Donna Summer compilation, titled, Summer: The Original Hits, according to The release is a tie-in with the new Broadway show, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, which begins previews on March 28th at Manhattan’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre — with an opening night set for April 23rd. The bio-musical, which received middling reviews for its recent California run, traces the life and career of the “Queen of Disco” along with her collaboration with producer Giorgio Moroder and Casablanca Records which defined the late-’70s disco era. Donna Summer died on May 17th, 2012 of lung cancer at age 63. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

Summer: The Original Hits includes Summer’s four Number Ones “MacArthur Park,” “Hot Stuff,” “Dim All The Lights,” “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” with Barbra Streisand, and “Bad Girls,” which topped the charts for five weeks in 1979. Other hits include the Top 10 smashes “Heaven Knows,” “She Works Hard For The Money,” “On The Radio,” “Dim All The Lights,” “I Feel Love,” and “Love To Love You Baby,” among others. Summer: The Original Hits also features new remixes of “MacArthur Park” and “Hot Stuff.”

Back in 1978 Donna Summer admitted that she wasn’t sure if she was viewed as a serious artist beyond her massive chart success: “I really couldn’t tell you. I hope I stand in the light of legitimacy, in a place where people will respect what I do, and understand that any songs that I do I choose to — and not because that is my limitation. And I think before, that was a problem. They thought that was my limitation.”
