Remembering Murphy’s Red Hots

Murphy’s Red Hots in Lakeview has closed its doors for the final time.  From it’s humble beginnings as “Everything On It,” to being crowned “My Favorite Chicago classic dog place,” by Chicago’s Best‘s Ted Brunson, Murphy’s has seen it all and served it all.

Bill Murphy really made his dog stand out by the way he grilled them.  Murph cut his dogs in half and cut slits in them before bringing them to the grill.  Your hotdog or Polish sausage was then grilled to perfection inside and out before it made it to your plate.  Murphy stood by the no ketchup rule, but made an exception for those “With training wheels on their bike,” and pregnant women.

Murphy’s last day of business was Saturday, August 18th.  On the Murphy’s Red Hots’ website, Murphy posted a message stating his decision to retire and close shop.  He says, “After more than 30 years the time has come to change things up a bit and I’m very much looking forward to spending more time with my wonderful wife and family.  Thank you all for your support and even more so, your friendship over the years.”  Good luck Bill Murphy and should you ever decide to grill some dogs again, please let me know!
