Original lyric sheet to Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ going under the hammer

Bernie Taupin‘s original handwritten lyrics to his and Elton John‘s breakthrough hit “Your Song” will head to auction next month, according to Udiscovermusic.com. The lyric sheet is being shown at the Bonhams auction house in London until Sunday (October 14th) in advance the of Bonhams Rock and Roll Memorabilia Sale, set for Bonhams New York on November 19th.

Catherine Williamson, the Director of Books and Manuscripts at Bonhams said, “‘Your Song’ played a pivotal role in projecting both Elton John and Bernie Taupin into the limelight. It is a remarkable song that has stood the test of time and this original script highlights that its longevity is due to the mastery of the two artists.”

Elton John spoke to Pulse about how his and Bernie Taupin’s early works led directly to the success of “Your Song”: “I really started off as a songwriter with Bernie and because people didn’t record our songs, fate had a hand in me recording them myself and making an album, called Empty Sky and then making the Elton John album, which had ‘Your Song’ on it. No, never in a million years (laughs) did I think my career would last this long. I’m very grateful it has, because I’ve enjoyed the ride… it’s been tremendous!”
