116-year-old Japanese woman recognized by Guinness as world’s oldest person

Guinness World Records officially recognized a 116-year-old Japanese woman as the oldest living person on Saturday (March 9th). The recognition took place at a ceremony at the nursing home in the city of Fukuoka where Kane Tanaka lives, with her family and the mayor on hand.

The previous oldest living person was another Japanese woman, Chiyo Miyako, who died last July at 117. And the oldest person before that was also Japanese. The oldest-living person ever was a French woman named Jeanne Louise Calment, who died at age 122 , according to Guinness.
