Weather forecasters warn about major spring flooding

Government forecasters warned yesterday (March 21st) about the risk of unprecedented flooding this spring. Mary Erickson, deputy director of the National Weather Service, said this year’s flooding, quote, “could be worse than anything we’ve seen in recent years, even worse than the historic floods of 1993 and 2011.” There is currently major flooding in several Midwestern states due to a powerful storm last week and melting snow, and Erickson warned, “We expect the flooding to get worse and more widespread.” The factors contributing to the flood risk include above average rainfall this winter, the third wettest year in U.S. history, and rapidly melting snow in the Upper Midwest.

Hopefully we won’t see a repeat of this – just 2 years ago, Chicago’s Riverwalk was flooded:
