Motley Crue guitarist Mick Mars said he was “clearly joking” when he said in 2014 that he would “invite the world to come for free” if Motley Crue ever reunited following its 2014/2015 farewell tour. Mars added that he was “wrong” at the time to say that the band would never tour again after completing what was billed as its final trek.

Mars posted on his Instagram page, “While I was clearly joking about the free tickets that night . . . I was also deeply convinced that we would never ever be touring again. I would never have expected to be facing a whole new generation of fans demanding to see us play.”

Mars added, “Anyways, I am eating a lot of crow and humble pie this Thanksgiving for those remarks and accept that some of you see this as me being dishonest. I said what I said and I was wrong. Peace.”

The guitarist offered his comments after a viral video from a 2014 episode of the now-defunct That Metal Show saw him being asked about the possibility of the Crue reuniting after promising that its 2014/2015 farewell run was really its last. Mars replied, “Let me put it this way: If that happens, I will invite the world to come for free.”

Crue fans who shelled out for the “farewell” tour were led to believe that the group would never return after playing its final show on December 2015 at the Forum in Los Angeles. The band touted the signing of a pre-tour “cessation of touring” agreement as cementing the fact it truly was the end of Crue’s life on the road.

Earlier this month, the band posted a video explaining that due to the group “becoming more popular than ever” and “gaining an entirely new legion of fans” in the four years they’ve been off the road, the Crue is coming out of retirement. They will reportedly embark on a stadium tour with Def Leppard and Poison in 2020, but that has yet to be officially confirmed.
