Gran Kermes Festival (Benefit/Fundraiser)

St. Joseph Parish, 7240 West 57th Street in Summit will be hosting “Gran Kermes” a day-long celebration featuring entertainment, ethnic foods and culture, on September 4, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. in the church parking lot. Admission to the festival and entertainment is free. All faiths and ethnic groups are welcome to attend! A variety of ethnic foods will be available for sale, with the proceeds benefiting the church, which recently experienced flooding and needs some repairs. Highlights of the festival include free entertainment including a family oriented show featuring puppets and music. "A Very Special Star" at 5 p.m. features voices by Chicagoland Singer/Songwriter Kroozin Karen and a 2 p.m. performance by the Mexican Folklore Dancers!

Bands, brats, beers and bags are the theme of Rocktoberfest scheduled for Saturday, September 18. Live music featuring The Bad Dads, a local west suburban band rockin’ classic covers, will be featured from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The popular Journey tribute band Infinity will rock the house with 80’s music from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from a basic $10 entry fee and access local food vendors including Aurelio’s Pizza, La Cabanita, Q BBQ, DeVries for hot dogs and brats and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. All funds raised by Rocktoberfest support Community Nurse Health Association, a free medical and dental clinic for low income and uninsured adults and children of the western suburbs.

“You Brought This on Yourself” (Event)

A multimedia staged-reading of an original script by Lewis University's Professor of Philosophy, George David Miller, entitled "You Brought This on Yourself" comes to life at the SGI-USA Chicago Culture Center. Epic in structure, the play is concerned with a liberal suburban family that clashes with a conservative high school when their daughter is the victim of a hate crime. It is a dramatization, but some of the events are based-on actual hate crimes. The staged-reading incorporates filmed scenes, an original music/sound design and a cast of actors including the author. The show is recommended for those who are willing to explore and have fun with the controversial subject matter and audience members 13 years and older.

Sarah’s Circle, a safe refuge for at-risk women in the Uptown neighborhood, will host its 3rd annual Beer Tasting & Tour at Goose Island’s Brewpub on Thursday, Sept. 30, from 6-8pm. All proceeds will benefit Sarah’s Circle, which provides essential services for women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. These services range from basic life necessities – i.e. food, toiletries, showers, laundry, and clothing – to case management, educational programming and permanent housing. Five varieties of Goose Island beer will be available in cold pitchers throughout the evening. For non-drinkers (or light drinkers), Goose Island specialty sodas also will be provided. Tours of the brewery will be provided throughout the event. Learn about the beer-making process while seeing the equipment up close.
