On July 3rd, Mauyak (a 38 year-old) beluga whale gave birth to a 5 feet long, 150 lbs beluga calf. Mom and baby are both doing well and the staff say they are observing normal, healthy behaviors from both.
Peggy Sloan, the chief animal operations officer said the birth went very well and, “It couldn’t have been more beautifully done by Mauyak.” She also praised the mom for helping her calf come up for air as well as helping the calf swim and navigate.
This is the first baby beluga in 7 years at the Shedd Aquarium. The sex is unknown, and the calf has not been named yet.
Officials say they will be available for public display sometime this week.
What a beautiful, bouncing, baby beluga! (I love alliterations)
