If you’re planning on having fun by the water this summer, be cautious. Illinois officials are advising people to stay away from blue-green algae in lakes and rivers.
This algae produces toxic chemicals that can cause: rashes, wheezing, vomiting, and diarrhea. Anyone with a compromised immune system, the elderly, and young children are at a high risk of becoming severely ill.
Avoid contact with discolored water, especially if it has blue-green streaks that looks like spilled paint, and/or green scum blobs beneath the surface.
If you’re planning on hiking, biking, or camping near the water, you will not be affected. Just keep an eye out!
