Kevin Smith Is Working On New Masters Of The Universe Cartoons. PLEASE Don’t Suck.

He-Man and The Masters Of The Universe are coming back to Netflix, Kevin Smith is in charge of the production, and if it sucks I’m going to be very upset.

He-Man and the Masters Of The Universe dominated my childhood, and Kevin Smith dominated my teenage years.

Growing up, I wanted to be He-Man. I had the Master Sword. I had Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain. (photo of my sister and I below) My Dad took me to see Masters Of The Universe starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella. (And damn right I’m mentioning Frank Langella – he was an AWESOME Skeletor) I even LOVE the movie, and had toys of characters from the film like Gwildor and Blade. Sure I wish the movie would have been better, but it still was a fun part of my childhood. I can vividly remember bringing Spydor to Show and Tell in Kindergarten. I’ve still got MOTU stuff lying around my office.

When I got a little too old for Eternia and King Randor, I found The Quick Stop and King Randal. Clerks began a love affair between me and Kevin Smith’s films. It started with Dante and Randal in Clerks. and moved onto TS Quint and Brodie in Mallrats, When I was in 7th or 8th grade I faked sick from school and stayed home and watched Mallrats 3 times on a rented VHS. It was glorious. I’m a fan of all his movies, but coming back to Dante and Randal in Clerks 2 seemed extra special, just because we had all grown up in one way or the other.

It’s kind of odd thinking Kevin Smith is going to be in charge of resurrecting one of my favorite childhood franchises. There have been a few variations of MOTU after the original series, with the 2002 series being a pretty good follow up and the 1990 Adventures of He-Man falling pretty far short of the originals. This isn’t Smith’s first time dipping his toes into an animated series. While it didn’t light any ratings on fire, his Clerks cartoon is a treat for fans of the movies. It’s voiced by Brian O’halloran, Jeff Anderson, and Jason Mewes (Dante, Randal, and Jay) and it really respects the source material. Let’s hope Smith can respect the original Masters Of The Universe series in the same way.
