Lake Shore Drive name change vote delayed after unrelated chaos breaks out in Chicago City Council meeting

Today, the name is still, “Lake Shore Drive.”

Chicago City Council was supposed to vote on whether or not to change LSD’s name to Jean Baptiste Point du Sable Drive.  The name change is meant to honor the Haitian, first permanent non-Indigenous settler of territory that became Chicago.

This vote did not take place as a heat argument between 20th Ward Alderman Jeanette Taylor and Mayor Lori Lightfoot took place over voting in Celia Meza as the next corporation counsel.  So heated, the Mayor got right up in the Alderman’s face…

So the meeting was adjourned before the vote over Lake Shore Drive’s name could take place.  While the name change has a lot of support in the City Council, Mayor Lightfoot has expressed interest in vetoing a vote for change.  She has proposed naming the Riverwalk or a festival after du Sable instead.
