‘Deadpool 2’ topples ‘Infinity War’ with $125m opener

Deadpool 2 debuted to $125 million domestically and $301 globally after landing the biggest foreign debut ever for an R-rated title.  While the opener was impressive, it didn’t rival the first Deadpool, which premiered with $132.4 million in February of 2016, Fox’s Deadpool 2 nabbed the third-best domestic opening of the year to date behind Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther.  “The audience’s appetite for Merc with the Mouth hasn’t waned at all,” the Hollywood Reporter quoted Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson. “And Ryan Reynolds was tireless in promoting this movie on a global basis.”

Infinity War nabbed second place, followed by Book Club, starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, with a $12.5 million opener.  According to ComScore, overall box office is up 6.3 percent year-to-date.
