Solo: A Star Wars Story’ falters at the box office
May 29, 2018
The Force was not strong with this one. Disney and Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, a prequel about the origins of Han Solo made an estimated $101 domestically for its four-day weekend opening, including projections for Monday. Solo is the smallest opening for a Star Wars film since 2002.
The movie did manage to earn the best Memorial Day Weekend debut in four years, but it fell sharply below industry expectations of $130 million to $150 million reported earlier last week. Rogue One, another Star Wars spinoff, made $290 million globally for its debut in December of 2016.
Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, meanwhile, landed $16.5 million in its fifth weekend of release, pushing its 31-day total to $621.7 million. 20thCentury Fox’s Deadpool 2 earned $42.7 million (projected to be $53.5 million counting Monday’s receipts) in its second weekend out, earning $500 million + worldwide, a bargain for the $110 million it took to produce.
Observers credit much of the success of Deadpool 2 to star Ryan Reynolds, who has been promoting the film relentlessly for months.
