Thanksgiving turkeys will be smaller this year thanks to the coronavirus

It seems like the coronavirus pandemic has affected nearly every part of our lives, and that apparently even includes the size of Thanksgiving turkeys!

Because of the pandemic, Thanksgiving gatherings are going to be smaller this year, so that means smaller turkeys will likely be needed, and those involved in the supply chain are acting accordingly. Supermarket chains are buying smaller turkeys, and some, like Walmart, are increasing the availability of boneless and bone-in turkey breasts. For the same reason, farmers are slaughtering their turkeys earlier, when they’re a smaller size.

Still, the National Turkey Federation industry trade group doesn’t expect the number of turkeys eaten at Thanksgiving to fall much from its normal amount of about 40 million, just that the sizes and types of turkey will change.
