The best scary movies make your heart pound, and now researchers have ranked the scariest horror movies of all time by monitoring viewers’ average heart rates. The experts from Broadbandchoices.co.uk monitored the heart rates of 50 people as they watched more than 100 hours of horror films to determine the 35 scariest films of all time.
The 2012 film Sinister was considered most-scary, as audience members experienced an average 32 percent increase in heart rate while watching the film, from 65 beats per minute (bpm) to 86 bpm, and included spikes up to 133 bpm. Next on the list is Insidious (with jumps of heart rate up to 131 bpm), The Conjuring (84 bpm), Hereditary (83 bpm), and Paranormal Activity (82 bmp).
Other films that made the list: The Exorcist, Paranormal Activity, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Study creator Daniel Clifford says, “With more people than ever facing a Halloween at home, our Science of Scare study was designed to help people find the most scientifically scary films ever made, to save them the time of searching through thousands of titles across streaming services[…]”.
