Purple Pumpkins – Why you may be seeing them this Halloween

Halloween is going to be very different this year, as coronavirus cases rise. You might notice people putting teal or purple pumpkins out on their porches while trick-or-treating if you happen to go.

A few years ago, teal pumpkins were trendy, and are meant to signal that a home offers non-food treats for kids with allergies.  Purple pumpkins are new this year, and can mean a few different things…

First, it could mean it’s safe to stop at the house for candy because the occupants follow guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (including wearing a mask, distributing individuals wrapped candies, and maintaining proper sanitary conditions.)  But, the Epilepsy Foundation says purple pumpkins are meant to raise awareness for epilepsy.

If you’re going for that you can register to take part in the Purple Pumpkin Project on the Epilepsy Foundation’s website.
