Santa Claus is social distancing this year by not coming to Macy’s

Don’t go looking for Jolly Ole Saint Nick at the former Marshall Field and Company building this year.  Macy’s announced that Santa Claus will be taking a break from visiting their stores this year.  The change to the holiday tradition is an attempt to encourage social distancing and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Christmas movie fans will recall the real Santa posing as a mall Santa in New York’s Macy’s in the 1947 film, “Miracle on 34th Street.”  The tradition goes back even further to the 1860s.

Sant will still be making an appearance this year during the Macy’s Day parade.  The parade is seeing changes as well as it goes virtual for 2020 in order to not draw crowds and ensure the safety of its workers and volunteers.
