Marvel Studios dropped a trailer today for their new upcoming film, The Eternals.  The movie boasts a star-studded cast including Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan and more!  The Eternals hits theaters everywhere this November.

If you asked, “Who the F%!# are the Guardians of the Galaxy?” or maybe even, “Who the F%!# are The Avengers?” before those movies released, you may be asking the same about this new team.  And you’d be forgiven, as they’re no where near as known or as iconic as teams like the X-Men and Fantastic Four.

In the comics, the Eternals were one of two races created on Earth by the cosmic deities, The Celestials.  The other race, is their mortal foes, The Deviants. They have a history, much like the Greek and Roman gods, that proceeds the Marvel superheroes you know and love and include wars and power struggles.  Thanos is actually a descendent of the once leader of the Eternals, Kronos.

So yeah, there is a long and complicated history behind the Eternals that basically makes the characters similar to demigods.  They’re each powerful and apparently didn’t think it was a big deal when their distant cousin Thanos, wiped out half of the entire universe.  In this movie, it looks like their history will be simplified a bit for a general audience and likely not linked to Thanos at all.  And they’ve been around a very long time…

Notable members of this group include Sersi (played by Gemma Chan) who was a member of The Avengers in the comics and had a lot of interactions with the heroes you know and love, Gilgamesh who also served as a member of The Avengers and showed his strength against the likes of Thor and Hercules and Makkari who has been shown to be even faster than the speed-defying Quicksilver in the comics.

This is one of Marvel’s deepest cuts to hit film yet.  But Marvel Studios is no stranger to turning B-list characters into fan-favorites!
