Chicago skyline will light up red this weekend to celebrate Juneteenth

The Monday or Friday closest to June 19th will officially become a new federal holiday.

With bipartisan support in the senate, the House of Representatives has voted in favor of observing Juneteenth as a National Holiday.  This would make it the 11th federal holiday and the first new one since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was created in 1983.

The holiday will celebrate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.  Juneteenth has been celebrated since 1866.

With unanimous approval from the senate means President Biden just needs to sign the bill into law.

Governor Pritzker has also made Juneteenth an official Illinois holiday.  And in celebration, Chicago’s skyline will light up red this weekend to celebrate.

Happy Juneteenth, everybody!
