Oscars will include fan vote this year

Fans will be able to vote for their favorite film for the Academy Awards this year, with The Hollywood Reporter writing yesterday (February 14th) that people will able to vote on Twitter, and the movie that gets the most fan votes will be recognized during the March 27th Oscar broadcast.

Additionally, three Twitter users who voted will be chosen for an all-expenses-paid trip to L.A. to present an Oscar at next year’s ceremony. People can vote on movies released in 2021, regardless of whether they were nominated for an Oscar or not, using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite.

Voting started yesterday and will run through March 3rd. Meryl Johnson, the vice president of digital marketing at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, told The Hollywood Reporter, “Through these activations, social media users around the world now have more opportunities to engage with the show in real-time, find a community and be a part of the experience in ways they’ve never been able to before.”

The Academy considered adding a most popular film Oscars category in 2019 to encourage more people to watch the show, but they dropped it after getting strong pushback from critics and Academy members.
