A Shell gas station manager in Northern California who accidentally set prices at 69 cents a gallon instead of $6.99 last Thursday has been fired.

John Szczecina told CBS Sacramento, “I just took responsibility for it and I said, ‘Yeah it’s my fault, and I’m to blame.'” Driver Darryl Surita was one patron who realized the error, with local station KOVR reporting that he posted on Instagram about the insane bargain at the Rancho Cordova gas station. Other customers also being calling friends and family to quickly come and fill up.

Another driver, Eddie Surita, said, “It was crazy, it turned into a circus within a matter of minutes.” It took about three hours for the gas station to fix the problem, during which it lost $16,000.

Szczecina’s family set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise the money to repay the Shell station, and the fundraising goal has nearly been reached.
