‘Avengers’ smashes records at the box office with $250M

Disney and Marvel are celebrating an epic weekend at the box office. Avengers: Infinity War opened with $250 million, demolishing Disney’s previous record, set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Force earned $247.96 million.

Disney now holds 9 of the top 10 biggest openings in North American history. Worldwide, Avengers earned $630 million.  Infinity War also nabbed another record, earning the best Saturday ever with $83 million, 19% over the previous record holder set by Universal’s Jurassic World (it earned $69.6 million on June 13, 2015).  AMC reported that Avengers had the highest Friday and Saturday box office gross in the company’s 98-year history.

A Quiet Place came in second, earning $10.65 million in its fourth weekend out. I Feel Pretty earned $8.1 million, rounding out the top three. According to ComScore, overall box office is up 3.4 percent year-to-date.

April 27-29 figures, per ComScore:

1. Avengers: Infinity War — $250 million
2. A Quiet Place — $10.7 million

3. I Feel Pretty — $8.1 million
4. Rampage — $7.1 million

5. Black Panther — $4.4 million
