General Motors announced yesterday (November 26th) that it will lay off up to 14,000 workers and possibly close up to five plants in North America as it plans to stop making many of its car models and restructure to focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles. The changes also reflect North American buyers continuing to move away from cars towards buying SUVs and trucks. The planned job cuts include both white-collar and blue-collar employees in what is GM’s first major workforce reduction since thousands were laid off during the Great Recession.
