The Orland Park Board voted 5-2 to approve plans to move forward with a 230,000-square-foot Amazon commercial retail development.
Ahead of the vote, some residents voiced concerns about the new building, which would sit at the southwest corner of LaGrange Road and 159th Street.
The proposed store would feature a mix of groceries and merchandise, along with an attached warehouse to support on-site operations.
The site currently includes the closed Petey’s restaurant at the busy intersection. The 35-acre property is largely farmland.
Some Orland Park residents oppose the project, citing worries about increased traffic congestion and concerns that more than half of the site would be used as warehouse space.
According to a traffic study, an estimated 27 trucks would enter and exit the property each day.
Plans to help ease congestion include adding a new traffic signal, dual left-turn lanes and extending Ravinia Road to LaGrange Road.
There are also concerns about the long-term success of the Amazon store.
Village leaders say the development aligns with long-standing goals for the intersection and surrounding area. The mayor also said it could generate significant tax revenue for the village and provide construction jobs.
“It’ll benefit our schools, the township, fire district and from a sales tax perspective, obviously, it’s a nice impact on the budget. It allows us to cut other taxes at some point in the future or expand services or some combination,” Mayor Jim Dodge said.
The project is expected to bring about 200 construction jobs and 500 permanent positions.
“This project promises to bring meaningful work opportunities for skilled union tradespeople to ensure ongoing employment for years to come,” said John Dalton, treasurer of IBEW Local 134.
Officials plan to have to development open in 2027, with construction starting in spring 2026.
