‘Skyscraper’ fails to soar while Hotel Transylvania rises to the top

Hotel Transylvania 3 topped the box office with $44 million, exceeding expectations for Sony Animation’s $80 million threequel about animated ghouls on a cruise in the Bermuda Triangle. Observers point to the incredible voice cast and kid-friendly silliness as selling points for families in search of entertainment.

Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James,David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Keegan-Michael Key, Molly Shannon, Fran Drescher,Kathryn Hahn, Jim Gaffigan and Mel Brooksstar in the threequel.

Transylvania’s success put Skyscraper’s failure into stark relief. The Dwayne Johnson-toplined thriller brought in just $25.5 million. Observers say the $125 million production’s mixed reviews and a lack of buzz may doom it overseas as well. The Rawson Marshall Thurber-helmed film debuts in China next weekend.
