San Francisco may charge tourists to drive Lombard Street

San Francisco tourists may soon have to pay as much as $10 to drive down the city’s famous Lombard Street, dubbed the “Crookedest Street in the World.” City and state officials announced a bill earlier this week that would give San Francisco the authority to set up a toll and reservation system to drive down the street, which winds down a steep hill.

The goal is to reduce crowds and traffic congestion, with people who live on Lombard Street having called for action for years. An estimated 6,000 people a day visit Lombard Street in the summer, causing lines of cars to stretch for blocks.
