Paul McCartney has recorded a Latin-based tune for his upcoming studio album. McCartney was asked on his official website (PaulMcCartney.com) if he had ever thought of “exploring some of the Latin American genres like “son, rumba, salsa, merengue, tango, samba, etc.?” To which “Macca” responded, “Yeah, once or twice! You know I’ve done something along those lines. My new album actually has something which is decidedly Latin. But I don’t know if it will make the cut. You never know with these things, but I think it will and people will understand what I’m talking about when they hear it. But I love Latin rhythms and have often experimented with them, but not a definitive thing like a tango or a salsa. It’s more the general rhythms of the country that I love.”
McCartney’s still-untitled album is due out this year and is being produced by Greg Kurstin, best known for his work with Adele. The set will be the followup to McCartney’s 2013 Top Three hit, New. Back in December, McCartney’s longtime keyboardist Paul “Wix” Wickens told Keyboardmag.com that the former Beatle had recently been busy in the studio: “I think he’s got 20 tracks underway. We’ve been recording on and off and he’s been going in and out on his own.”
Paul McCartney essentially records three times as much material as he needs for every studio album. McCartney was asked why he leaves so much material on the cutting room floor: “Probably the reason it’s unreleased is that it’s not that good, y’know? We have little bits and pieces, which I might release one of these days, but generally, if it’s not released, it’s ’cause I don’t think it’s good enough.”
Paul McCartney says that although he’s been asked to describe his songwriting process for decades, he admits that he’s afraid to delve too deeply into it: “Y’know, I think it spoils it for me to analyze it. It’s magic to me, this whole process is completely magic. And I really always feel like someone’s gonna catch me and stop me doing it for a living. (Adopts stern voice) ‘McCartney! You’re writing again!’ (Adopts young voice) ‘Sorry sir!’ There’s always that feeling that this is just too good to be true, so I don’t wanna tempt fate.”
