Journey‘s Jonathan Cain will release his latest solo album, titled Songs You Can’t Leave Behind, on June 8th. The collection, which features 19 tracks — including two new songs — was recorded as a companion piece to Cain’s acclaimed new memoir, Don’t Stop Believin.’
The song “The Day They Became Angles” salutes the deceased from the infamous December 1st, 1958 school fire at Chicago’s Our Lady of the Angels church which took the lives 92 of Cain’s classmates and three teaching nuns. Joining him on the song, which Cain first performed in 2008 at the 50th anniversary tribute to the fallen, is guitarist Miles Schon — son of Journey co-founder Neal Schon.
Cain spoke about the fire and the impact it’s had on his life up through today, telling, The Christian Beat, “The fire shook my faith as an eight-year-old child. But when I look back now, I see a thread of redemption. That tragedy forever changed fire codes around the world, saving countless others.”
Jonathan Cain is still visibly moved as he discusses the fire today. He recalled what the authorities ascertained about the cause and spread of the fire: “They first truck got there — they didn’t know where it was! They were running around the building looking. . . Some kid, one of our kids, I think — we, we don’t really know for sure, but we think it was (a) ‘pyromaniac sets a fire in Cicero,’ this is what the rumors have. . . And, it was right over a cold, intake pipe. One of those big lead pipes that led to the roof. So, there was this big bin of papers and it looked like (it was) too enticing, so he had to set it on fire. But what he didn’t realize was this big intake pipe and it went straight up the roof. All the heat and smoke gathered up there and then burned the building from the roof down — to the point where one of the rooms caved in and 73 children died.”
