The Doobie Brothers announce full-album performances for NYC run

The Doobie Brothers are the latest band to tackle full-album sets in their shows. The group’s first ever full-album performances will play over two nights at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre; with the band tackling 1972’s Toulouse Street — plus select hits — on Thursday, November 15th, and 1973’s The Captain And Me — plus select hits — on Friday, November 16th. 1972’s Toulouse Streetfeatured such instant classics as “Listen To The Music,” “Rockin’ Down The Highway” and “Jesus Is Just Alright.” 1973’s The Captain And Me featured such standouts as “Long Train Runnin’,” “China Grove,” and fan favorites “South City Midnight Lady,” and “Without You.

Co-founder Tom Johnston told Pulse the band is already starting to run through material while on the road: “We’ve been workin’ on it at soundchecks and we’ll be rehearsing it in our off time after we get off the road. ‘Should be quite a trip — we’ve never done anything like this, I’m lookin’ forward to it and it seems like a fun thing to do. I’ve always been curious how people would react to hearing it sequenced live, y’know, playing it live in album sequence as opposed to the way you’d normally play live. ‘Cause it’s a different thing altogether, listening to record than it is to a live performance.”

Johnston went to say that the full album sets will only take up about a third of a typical Doobies show: “We’ll use other cuts from other albums, because neither one of the albums takes up what you would call a ‘full set’ time. So, we’ll probably liven it up, if you will, with songs from other albums. And the there are gonna be a lot of deep cuts that are gonna be used anyway for both albums. And I think that’s the most interesting part of all for people who. . . Everybody’s heard the quote unqoute ‘hits’ and I think it’s neat to have ’em hear stuff that we don’t normally play — we play some of ’em, but there are some, quite frankly, we’venever played, which is really making this (laughs) interesting for us.”
