Rise of online booking sites are making your hotels cost more

There are a lot of travel booking websites that promise to get you low prices on hotel rooms, but it turns out they might be making rooms more expensive overall. Right now two companies: Booking Holidays (owns booking.com), and Expedia group (owns hotels.com and Trivago), control 80 percent of the hotel comparison market.

David Weston, with the Bed and Breakfast Association, says when you book through an online platform, approximately $1.30 of every $6.52 spent is going to the booking site rather than to the hotel itself. The additional cost (up to 20%) is passed off to the customer, leading to higher rates for everyone.
