Sunscreen is absorbed into our blood at concentrations up to 419 times above what is safe

Using sunscreen is supposed to help keep us safe from the sun’s harmful effects, but it turns out sunscreen itself can be harmful. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that the chemical oxybenzone, which absorbs UVA and UVB rays, gets absorbed in our blood in concentrations up to 419 times higher than what is considered safe. Oxybenzone can potentially cause cancer, and may also disrupt hormones, which could harm babies. Still, scientists say this shouldn’t discourage people from using sunscreen.
