Kiefer Sutherland believes he invented the mullet back when he was making the 1987 vampire classic “The Lost Boys”. Director Joel Schumacher wanted Sutherland to have long, white hair. His hair was already long, but it was long all over. When he dyed it white, he hated the way it looked.
Then he saw Billy Idol with his spiky white hair, and he thought it was, quote, “badass,” so he got his hair cut like that, but kept it long in the back to appease Schumacher. He says in an interview with MVPs of Horror, quote, “I actually think I might’ve been responsible, or at least partially responsible, for creating the mullet. And for that, I’ll apologize to the death.”
