CAUTION: This may actually blow your mind. If you’re like me, you’ve been visiting Aldi for groceries for as long as you can remember. And, in ALL that time, you’ve pronounced the name of the store as, “ALL-DEE.” It turns out, after all these years, you’ve been saying, “Aldi,” WRONG!
Let’s go back for some context. Aldi was founded by the Albrecht brothers. Their name is pronounced “AL-brecht” like the first names of Al or Sal. The name Aldi, comes from a combination of the first two letters of their name and the first two letters of the word, “Discount.” Therefore, the correct pronunciation of Aldi is “AL-DEE.”
You’d be forgiven for not adhering to the original pronunciation though as even in this vintage Aldi commercial from 1979, they say Aldi they way we’ve all been doing it for years. The branding was clearly already there, so the store never bothered to correct the public.
So, in that case, you can really say Aldi anyway you’d like. Sorry, Albrecht brothers, I’ll be sticking to the way I’ve been saying it all my life.
