These 3 Chicago suburbs are some of the wealthiest nationwide, study finds

Three Chicago suburbs have ranked among the 50 wealthiest suburbs in the country, according to a new study.

Hinsdale ranked in the top 10, landing at No. 8 on the 2025 list by GOBankingRates. Lake Forest and Wilmette also made the cut, coming in at No. 31 and No. 37, respectively.

To have been considered for the ranking, cities must contain at least 5,000 households and be part of a metropolitan statistical area. Qualifying municipalities were ranked based on average household income in 2023, according to GOBankingRates.

All three Illinois cities were also included in GOBankingRates’ 2024 ranking. In addition to tracking changes in household income, the list includes data on the change in home values, sourced from the Zillow Home Value Index, although this was not used when ranking the suburbs.

Hinsdale

• Change in household income from 2022: -4.3%
• 2025 home value: $1,234,894

Lake Forest

• 2025 ranking: 31st
• 2024 ranking: 30th
• Average household income in 2023: $302,171
• Change in household income from 2022: 2.7%
• 2025 home value: $1,185,363
• Change in home value from 2024: 6.1%

Wilmette

• 2025 ranking: 37th
• 2024 ranking: 40th
• Average household income in 2023: $291,930
• Change in household income from 2022: 3.2%
• 2025 home value: $999,547
• Change in home value from 2024: 6.8%

For the second year in a row, Scarsdale, New York, topped the list as the country’s wealthiest suburb. According to the data, Scarsdale saw a 2023 average household income of $601,193, and the suburb’s average home value in 2025 was $1,207,528.

California was once again the state with the most suburbs ranking in the top 50, followed by Texas.
