Summer in Chicago has no shortage of beloved traditions, from massive music festivals to movie nights in the park. But this week will host one of the city’s most unique summer events: the Chicago Ducky Derby.
The Chicago Ducky Derby is an annual rubber duck race in the Chicago River to fundraise for Special Olympics Illinois. This year’s derby will take place Aug. 7. Ducks will be dropped at the Columbus Bridge Drive at 1 p.m., and the race will be about 30 minutes long.
On the day of the race, the Derby Festival will last between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in Pioneer Court, 401 N. Michigan Ave., and feature activities, food vendors and souvenir sales. The festival will be home to a dunk tank, balloon artist and DJ, according to the event website.
The race can be seen from the riverfront or at the official watch party at The Northman, 233 E. Riverwalk, starting at 12 p.m.
Attendees can “adopt” a duck and enter the race for $10. For those looking to buy more than one duck, package prices are available online.
The owners of winning ducks will be notified by phone or email and do not need to be present to win. Prizes include a Chevy Trailblazer, a $2,500 cash prize and four W Club Chicago Cubs Tickets for the Sept. 28 game against the St. Louis Cardinals. All entrants must be age 18 or older.
Ducks can be adopted online or on the day of the derby until around 12:30 p.m. According to organizers, proceeds benefit a community of more than 24,000 Special Olympics Illinois athletes.
