Chicago suburb ranks second on new list of most popular city-inspired baby names

A Chicago suburb came in second on a new list of America’s most popular city-inspired baby names.

Of the over 59,000 babies named after American cities in 2024, nearly 7,000 were named ‘Aurora.’

Baby name data for 2024 from the Social Security Administration was analyzed and compared to the 300 most popular cities in the U.S. by Lingoda, an online language learning school, to create the list.

‘Aurora’ wasn’t the lone Midwestern city in the top 10 city-inspired baby names. ‘Madison,’ after the Wisconsin city, ranked sixth on the list.

Here’s a look at the full list:

  1. Charlotte (North Carolina)
  2. Aurora (Colorado and Illinois)
  3. Jackson (Mississippi)
  4. Elizabeth (New Jersey)
  5. Lincoln (Nebraska)
  6. Madison (Wisconsin)
  7. Everett (Washington)
  8. Austin (Texas)
  9. Savannah (Georgia)
  10. Tyler (Texas)

“Our analysis of city-inspired baby names reveals how Americans connect with places across the country,” said Feliz Wundelich, founder of Lingoda.

The names “carry historical significance, regional pride and cultural associations that parents want to connect their children with,” he added.
