Caleb Williams has been the king of comebacks this season for the Chicago Bears. In fact, he’s now in a class all of his own for the charter franchise.
The Bears once again snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with their 19-17 win over the Minnesota Vikings, thanks to a game-winning field goal from Cairo Santos. It was the fifth fourth-quarter comeback for the Bears with Williams at the helm, something no Bears quarterback has ever done.
According to Bear Report’s Zack Pearson, Williams now holds the franchise record for most fourth-quarter comebacks by any Bears quarterback in a single season. Williams was previously tied with Jay Cutler for the single-season record with four, who achieved that feat in 2010 and 2015.
Sunday’s win also gave Williams seven fourth-quarter comebacks in his career, which ties him with players such as Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, Jake Plummer, Bo Nix, Josh Freeman, and Jay Schroeder for the most during their first two seasons in the league. Williams still has seven games left in his second season to move into first all-time for that record as well, though he will be duking it out with Nix.
After the Vikings went up 17-16 with under a minute to go, kick returner Devin Duvernay bolted 56 yards upfield on the ensuing kickoff to put the Bears in prime field goal position. Then, head coach Ben Johnson called three straight runs to get closer for Santos, who drilled the ball through the uprights. Williams still gets the credit, though, and the Bears are rolling at 7-3 and (for the moment) in sole possession of first place in the NFC North.
