A finance website recently named the biggest boomtown in every state, and a Chicago suburb claimed the top spot in Illinois.
GOBankingRates examined cities with populations between 25,000 and 500,000 using U.S. Census Bureau data from 2015 and 2023. To determine the city in each state with the largest population increase, researchers calculated eight-year changes in population and per capita income.
In Illinois, Plainfield was named No. 1.
The southwest suburb spans parts of Kendall and Will counties, and as of the 2020 Census, reported 44,762 residents.
In determining the rankings, here’s what data regarding Plainfield researchers took into account:
- 2023 total population: 45,705
- 2023 per capita income: $53,675
- % change in population (2015-23): 11.9%
- % change in per capita income (2015-23): 43.2%
Plainfield might be the biggest boomtown in Illinois – but it’s not the largest in the United States.
Fulshear, Texas, a city of around 40,000 residents outside of Houston, secured the nation’s highest spot; the community’s population has grown a whopping 736% over the past eight years, according to the website.
