The University of Chicago is among the world’s top universities, according to a new report from Time Magazine, ranking above Ivy League schools like Harvard, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania, with five other Illinois schools also appearing on the global list.
The ranking, released Jan. 28, places emphasis on “where students are likely to achieve the greatest success and contribute most to society.” The report also recognizes that the top universities are most accessible to those from high-income families, resulting in a lack of socioeconomic diversity.
“The pattern is clear,” editors wrote. “The world’s most influential universities serve society’s most privileged families.”
According to the report, schools had to be older than three years, offer bachelor’s degrees and enroll more than 2,000 students in order to be considered. In addition to academic capacity; innovation and global economic impact; the report also took into account schools with “highly cited researchers,” and ones the publication considered “among the most renowned and frequently mentioned institutions.”
Universities were also shortlisted if they applied to be in the report through Time’s open call to action, the report said.
