Paul McCartney wishes he had written ’90s Sting classic

Sting took to Twitter to return a compliment Paul McCartney gave him while addressing students at the Liverpool Institute Of Art (LIPA) on July 25th. According to The Irish Times, the former-Beatle was asked what song by another composer he wished he had written, to which “Macca” revealed, “I liked Sting’s ‘Fields Of Gold,’ and I thought, ‘Y’know what, I should have written that. How dare he? . . . ‘I told him ‘You stole my song.’ I thought that was a nice one, y’know?”

Sting responded to his childhood hero in a tweet stating: “Paul McCartney says he wishes he would have written ‘Fields Of Gold.’ There are more than a few of Paul’s that I wish I would have written. To hear this from someone I owe my life to is very special. Thank you, Paul.”

During his monthly Q&A with fans dubbed, “You Gave Me The Answer”: in which McCartney answers questions posted on Instagram, McCartney was asked whether his studio tracks are all mapped out in his head before he brings the songs into the studio: “Y’know, when you’re writing the song, you just get a feeling of how its going to sound, and then you record it and it changes. It kinda morphs into the record.”

Sting‘s “Field Of Gold” was featured on his fourth studio set, 1993’s Ten Summoner’s Tales, which peaked at Number Two on the Billboard 200. “Fields Of Gold” was the second single from the album and topped out at Number 23

Paul McCartney has announced the September 7th release of his 26th mainstream studio album, Egypt Station. On June 20th, McCartney released two songs from the set as a “Double A-Side” single — “Come On To Me” and “I Don’t Know.” The album was recorded in Los Angeles, London and Sussex, and produced — with the exception of one track — by Greg Kurstin, who best known for his work behind the boards for Adele, Beck, and Foo Fighters.
