Chicago’s Navy Pier will be the epicenter of an “Animal House” reunion to honor the late filmmaker Harold Ramis on Groundhog Day.
In Chicago, Groundhog Day isn’t just about seeing shadows; it’s about celebrating the life of one of Chicago’s greatest filmmakers.
This is the third annual “Harold Ramis Day” celebration, which takes place at Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse, but this year, they are shaking things up.
Monday’s celebration will include “Animal House” cast member Tim Matheson (Otter), who will serve as the master of ceremonies.
James Widdoes (Hoover), Peter Riegert (Boon), Mark Metcalf (Neidermeyer), James Daughton (Greg Marmalard) and Martha Smith (Babs) will also be in attendance.
At 3pm, the restaurant will feature a “Groundhog Day”/”Animal House” crossover where the cast will talk about Ramis and then lead a Groundhog Day ceremony, with a groundhog named “Chicago Harry.”
The restaurant will also transform into a Ramis-inspired experience, featuring themed décor, music and menu items that pay homage to the late director’s films.
Ramis, who died in 2014, wrote and directed huge comedies like “Caddyshack” and “Groundhog Day,” but he co-wrote “Animal House,” and John Landis directed.
“Animal House” is widely considered one of the best comedies of all time and was the highest-grossing comedy film of the 1970s.
In just its third year, Harold Ramis Day on Navy Pier is becoming a must-visit annual tradition.
The outdoor event is free, togas optional. Discounted parking ($20) is available.
