Why did the chicken cross the Eisenhower Expressway in Chicago? Illinois State Police had the perfect response to that question when asked Tuesday morning.
The scene unfolded around 9 a.m. on I-290 near Kedzie.
NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes captured footage of the animal on the side of roadway during rush hour. Jeanes reported traffic had slowed dramatically as the animal crossed the street and sat on the left shoulder of the inbound lanes.
When NBC Chicago reached out to Illinois State Police about whether a chicken was reported to be crossing the road, they answered with the best possible response.
“We will check the other side,” a spokesperson for the department said.
Ultimately, no calls surrounding the animal had come through Tuesday morning, however.
In the evening, however, Jeanes received the message he had been waiting for: the chicken was safe. Or as one might say – it made it to the other side of the road.
An NBC Chicago viewer told Jeanes her daughter rescued the chicken and shared photos of the bird.
Along with being safe and sound, the chicken now has a name: Hen-nessy.
