Streaming now accounts for 75 percent of music consumption

Streaming’s takeover of how we listen to music is continuing to rapidly grow and dominate, now accounting for 75 percent of music consumption, according to new figures from Nielsen. Its Mid-Year Music Report showed that streaming made up 75 percent of music consumption in the first half of this year, compared to 62 percent in the first half of 2017 and 50 percent in the first half of 2016. Streaming accounted for three times as much of U.S. music consumption in the first half of 2018, as physical album sales, digital album sales, and digital track sales combined.

Physical album sales made up 11 percent of music consumption in the first half of this year, down from 16 percent in 2017 and 20 percent in 2016. Digital album sales made up 8 percent of music consumption in the first half of this year, down from 12 percent in 2017 and 16 percent in 2016.
