Today (July 20th) marks the 50th anniversary of the Special Olympics.  In 1968 the first Special Olympics was held in Chicago at Soldier Field.  Bears stadium now has a new feature that honors the many athletes that have participated in the games.  “The Eternal Flame of Hope,” sculpted by Chicago sculptor, Richard Hunt has been erected on Soldier Field’s north lawn.

The statue honors the 50 years of Special Olympics.  Today, 170 countries participate in the game and 7.5 million athletes compete.
