Station wagons are facing extinction and getting more expensive

Some people really love station wagons, but that’s not really reflected in sales of the vehicles lately. J.D. Power Vice President Tyson Jominy says just 1.4 percent of cars sold in the U.S. last year were station wagons, and that number includes over 178,000 Subaru Outbacks, which is technically close to an SUV in design. The only station wagon currently available from an American brand is the Buick Regal TourX.

But now, Audi has plans to release a high-performance station wagon in the U.S. next year. The car will feature all-wheel drive, and the Audi RS6 Avant is powered by a 591 hp twin-turbocharged V8 and is capable of hitting a top speed of about 190 miles per hour. But why are they even bothering? Well, it all comes down to the high prices high-end station wagons can demand, though releasing one doesn’t guarantee success.
