City drivers who’ve begrudgingly gotten used to standstill traffic on the Kennedy Expressway and neighboring streets may soon get a bit more breathing room.
All lanes on the expressway north of Addison Street will reopen over the next week, according to a Wednesday news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
“Reducing the overall length of the work zone by 2 miles represents the latest significant milestone in the ongoing expressway rehabilitation from Ohio Street to the Edens Expressway (I-94) junction,” according to IDOT.
The $169 million years-long project to rehab the expressway will be 70 percent finished for its current construction season once the latest round of reopening is complete.
The overall project is “on pace” to be finished by Thanksgiving, according to IDOT.
The expressway exits at Kimball, Armitage, Milwaukee Avenues and Augusta Boulevard remain closed. Entrances at Addison Street, Western Avenue, Fullerton and North Avenues are also closed.
