Illinois DMV beginning new “Skip the Line” program

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is now accepting appointments to skip the line at the DMV.

Starting Friday, an appointment will be required to get in the door at all suburban and city locations.

The Secretary of State officially rolls out its Skip-the-Line Program Friday hopes of putting an end to long lines at driver services offices.

Walk-ins will no longer be accepted, and appointments will now be required to get a driver’s license or a license plate.

This applies to the 44 busiest DMV offices – including all Chicago and suburban offices and some downstate offices.

“Tomorrow, we begin our effort to cut the time tax that Illinoisans have been paying for far too long. In the past, when the customer had to visit a DMV, it was impossible to know how long they would be stuck waiting in line. They would need to consider if they should take time off work, get a babysitter, or even how much coffee would be required to stay a wait during their wait,” said Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. “That’s a tax on our most valuable commodity – time. And Illinoisans shouldn’t be forced to waste valuable time waiting for a required service.”

With the new program, you can also expect extended hours, as well as expanded online services.
